Don't Protest DNC Meeting, Obama Supporters

advertisement

Seed Newsvine

By Jackie Will - May 30th, 2008 at 5:14 pm EDT

Summary: Obama Campaign asks Obama supporters not protest outside of the hotel where the DNC Rules and By-Laws Committee will meet on Saturday, May 31, 2008. The meeting will be broadcast live on CSPAN. Volunteer for your local voter registration drive.

Don't Demonstrate, Register Voters As promised, I faxed the Obama Campaign requesting an official response to emails and blogs telling Obama supporters not to protest outside the DNC Rules and By-Laws Meeting on May 31st in Washington, DC.

I got a call today from Emily Jacobson of the Obama Campaign Political Department. She said the Obama Campaign requests we do not protest outside the meeting with Clinton supporters.

Unless you have a ticket to observe the meeting, the Obama campaign asks you not to demonstrate outside. You can watch the meeting live on CSPAN or join a voter registration in your area.

My Opinion
Take a walk in Clinton supporter shoes. How might you be feeling? We can't blame Hillary and Bill Clinton's choices on her supporters. Now is the time for unity, not a chaotic protest bound to attract "outside agitators"* poised to make trouble.

How to Watch the DNC Meeting
I just spoke with the DNC on Wednesday. Here's how you can participate, if you do not currently have a ticket/pass...

1. Show up early (if I could make it, I'd stay in the hotel or arrive by 4am) to get in line for a same day pass/ticket to be in the meeting or to observe the meeting from an overflow room inside the hotel;

2. If you are a guest, you can watch it on TV's the hotel will set up; and

3. Stay home and watch the live broadcast on c-Span or via a live stream on the democrats.org web site.

4. Ignore the meeting. Register new voters!

-----------------------
* An outside agitator, is not a supporter of either candidate. They may show up to gawk or try to start trouble.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT I have it on good authority that at Saturday's rules committee meeting in DC . there will be people who say that they are Obama supporters fighting with Clinton supporters who will be Clinton plants just to grab the cameras. We were told by the Obama campaign to stay away from the rules comm. and not give people reason to see the democrats in this divisive mode. There are supposed to be Republican plants there also. What desperation! Elaine LaMagna

Thanks for the heads up.

How sad is it that I do believe without a doubt that Clinton would stoop to this?

Axelrod took some heat yesterday from the pundits with a statement about this, specifically addressing the fact they had called on local supporters to volunteer for registration drives--I believe what raised the eyebrows was something like--"look, with one click of the mid-Atlantic mouse, we could have thousands of people there." Thats not exact--but pretty close.

And they could.

I am glad they had to foresight to address this before it turned into a free for all....

Good advice Jackie. Also, I really like your icon, it isn't often I see the Episcopal Church advertised :) We had a beautiful Corpus Christi this past Sunday.

I think Obama should be pushing for them to count the delegates. Even if they counted all of them and give Obama the undecided vote in Michigan Hillary still needs 75% of the remaining delegates to win. Not gonna happen. It will be interesting to see what happens, I believe they have to vote unanimously, and don't forget that Ickes is on the committee, he will derail anything that gives Obama that undecided vote in Michigan is my bet.

Rush Limbaugh told us there will be riots t the DNC Convention. Republicans and others have a financial, political and personal interest in causing trouble. I wonder how many Clinton supporters on their way to DC are part of Operation Chaos?

Clinton supporters bought ads in major newspapers encouraging them to come out in force on Saturday. That was news to me. Where did they get all this money (one group raised more than $250,000k) to place ads in one or more national publications? I hope they didn't break any campaign finance rules.

The gentleman who reminded reporters we were only a mouse click away, was being frank. If Obama can attract 75,000 in Oregon, a massive crowd in Washington, DC is simple. What if he'd said, "Guys, this is Washington, DC home of wealthy elites, advanced degreed professionals, liberal students and BLACK PEOPLE. Forget my mouse, I'll just holler." Now that would be bragging, he only spoke the truth.

Obama supporters are thinking about the... A. One to three more conservative judges McCain has promised to appoint to the Suprem Court;
B. Women's choice and reproductive rights threatened because McCain is pro-life and got a 0 rating
NARAL, while Obama has a 100% rating;
C. Our sons and daughters risking their lives in Iraq;
D. Reasonable help assistance for the victims of unethical mortgage companies; and
E. The Dems winning in November and more!
We're ready to compromise and focus on what we have in common rather than what divides us. We
seem to be on our own.

Most Clinton supporters are not bigots. They prefer Hillary for their own valid reasons. But some Clinton and McCain voters are making an anti-black vote. They've told us Obama's race is a problem. People of color defend their freedoms and but don't deserve fair play on the voting booth.

Ain't that the truth.

One email and the National Mall would be packed within the hour with more on the way.

njb, Double Demon and Elaine -

Thanks for responding to my post. I want to apologize for the typos. I was about to proofread it when I got interrupted.

Also, I have not figured out newsvine software yet. So many features. Is there a spellcheck on the comment post form? You see, I am still at square one. njb,

I was thinking the same thing. We could do the March on Washington again! Not that I was at the first one! I learned about it in college (smile).

Jackie

No worries--I read what you meant.

I am still figuring out html myself. As far as spell check goes---I use Firefox as my browser-it includes spell check---keeps me from sounding like an idiot online.

I'm going back to Texas in June(my party chair friends have convinced me I'm needed there more to help turn Texas blue again)--so if we need a march on D.C.--lets get moving. I don't want to miss it.

Mind you I could still come-I've made the drive from Houston to D.C. enough I can do it in 18 hours--but--would prefer the metro--so much easier.
